Introduction

The TV show, Jake and the Never Land Pirates is a spin-off from the Disney movie Peter Pan. The show centers around a group of three young kids who make up a crew of pirates in Never Land under the leadership of one of the group named Jake (hence the name of the show). Each episode has the kids, their talking parrot, and their magical pirate ship matching wits against Captain Hook and his crew, as well as an assortment of other pirates in Never Land and an array of Never Land villains and characters. Captain Hook and his crew are portrayed as, essentially, bumbling idiots while Jake and his crew, and the other Never Land pirates are generally portrayed as heroic and virtuous.

Flags of various pirate ships

The vast majority of the pirates in the show are distinguished by unique symbols displayed on the sails of their ship rather than through the use of distinctive flags. Most pirate ships portrayed in the show fly monochrome flags or pennants that are light-toned: yellow, light purple, light blue, etc. The only two ships that fly unique flags are Captain Hook's ship, Jolly Roger, and Bucky, the magical ship carrying Jake and his crew.

The flag used by Jake and his crew is a white broad pennant with a black skull and crossbones toward the hoist. I assume that the reversal of the traditional pirate colors is meant to symbolize that Jake and his crew are "good pirates."

Captain Hook's ship, Jolly Roger

The flag used by Captain Hook on Jolly Roger is a variation on the traditional white skull and crossbones on a black field. In this case, the skull is wearing a large plumed hat reminiscent of the one worn by Captain Hook in both the movie Peter Pan and in this show. Likewise, the crossbones have been modified to be more reflective of Captain Hook, with the end of the bone pointing to the upper fly corner replaced with a hook.
